A godwit, Limosa lapponica, with a black and white barred tail and a slightly upturned bill, which breeds in the Eurasian and Alaskan tundra and winters in Europe, Africa, south-east Asia, and Australasia.

Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Fleming (1785–1857), naturalist and Free Church of Scotland minister.
