The customary length of a mile in Ireland, 2240 yards (approx. 2048 metres) (now historical ); (now chiefly informal ) a long distance; an indeterminate or unfixed distance.

Late 16th century; earliest use found in Richard Stanyhurst (1547–1618), literary scholar and translator.
