A country of South Asia, in the Ganges delta; population 156,050,900 (est. 2009); official language, Bengali; capital, Dhaka.
Formerly part of British India, the region became (as East Pakistan) one of the two geographical units of Pakistan. After civil war the independent republic of Bangladesh was proclaimed in 1971; it became a Commonwealth state in 1972.
