From classical Latin sciaena a sea fish, perhaps the meagre (Pliny) from ancient Greek σκίαινα a sea fish, perhaps the meagre or the umbrina from σκιά shadow + -αινα, suffix forming nouns; apparently so called on account of its dark colour. |
