The intermediate layer of an apical meristem, which develops into the cortical tissue.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science. From German Periblem from ancient Greek περίβλημα anything thrown or put round, as a garment, or a fortification from περι- + βλῆμα throw, after περιβάλλειν to throw round, put on (as a covering).
