Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Putnam's Monthly Magazine of American Literature, Science and Art. From the name of Josef (also written Joseph) Albert, Bavarian photographer, who invented the process in 1868 + type, after German Albertotypie, the name of the process and Albertotyp, the picture produced by it (both 1868).
