Origin
Early 19th century. From Tamil pañcamapantam and its etymon late Sanskrit pañcama-bandha fifth caste (from Sanskrit pañcama + bandha bondage from bandh-), a South Indian (probably Jain) variant of Sanskrit pañcamā jāti, lit. ‘fifth birth’.
