Either of two white-flowered cruciferous plants, (in early use) Lepidium heterophyllum of northwest Europe and (in later use) Lepidium draba, originally of western Asia and eastern Europe and now widespread in temperate regions, where it is often considered a weed.

Early 19th century; earliest use found in Samuel Frederick Gray (1766–1828), naturalist and pharmacologist.
