A landform of subarctic regions, consisting of a mound or ridge of peat covered with vegetation and containing a core of permanently frozen peat or mineral soil in which are numerous ice lenses.
Origin
1930s; earliest use found in The Geographical Review. From Swedish palse, pals from Finnish pals, palsa from Saami palsa. The plural form palsen is after German Palsen, plural.
