A viral disease of pigs occurring in acute and chronic forms that has symptoms similar to those of hog cholera and is transmitted by ticks and by contact with infected animals and secretions.
- African swine fever often has a very high mortality rate. It was first reported in Kenya and is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, but outbreaks have occurred elsewhere in Africa, in Europe, and in Central and South America.The virus causing it is a double-stranded DNA virus which is the type member of the family Asfarviridae..
