Dark ornamental wood derived from any of various tropical American trees, especially jacaranda, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), and ( US ) purple heart (Peltogyne paniculata).
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Holtzapffel (1806–1847), mechanical engineer and technical writer. From French palissandre from Dutch palissander, shortened from palissanderhout, probably alteration of Spanish palo santo guaiacum, lignum vitae, perhaps with some influence from palo sándalo sandalwood (a hardwood that was also becoming known at this time).
