A yellowish or brownish siliceous substance formed by the hydration and chemical alteration of basaltic glass, and occurring in vitreous basaltic tuffs that have undergone rapid chilling.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Charles Darwin (1809–1882), naturalist, geologist, and originator of the theory of natural selection. From German Palagonit from Palagonia, the name of a city in Sicily where the substance can be found + -it.
