A kind of vulture described as occurring in Florida, but of which there were no other confirmed sightings, perhaps a variety of the king vulture, Sarcorhamphus papa, or a separate species (named as S. sacra), now extinct.

Late 18th century; earliest use found in William Bartram (1739–1823), botanist and ornithologist.
