Early 19th century; earliest use found in The Monthly Review. Ultimately from Rusyn rusnak, noun, self-designation; compare Ukrainian rusnak. In some forms probably originally after German Russniaken, plural noun, itself ultimately from the Rusyn word, perhaps via a neighbouring Slavonic language; compare French roussniak.
