From classical Latin acroāsis public lecture, and its etymon ancient Greek ἀκρόασις action of hearing, something listened to, recitation, lecture from ἀκροᾶσθαι to listen, to listen to (from ἄκρος topmost + οὖς ear, the sense being ‘to prick the ears, listen carefully’) + -σις.
