Medicine. Originally: an ulcer of the nose (or, rarely, other part of the body), especially when accompanied by a fetid discharge; any of various conditions characterized by the presence of such a lesion. Later: specifically a chronic disease of the nose characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and bone, with a thick secretion that forms dry, extremely fetid crusts, often associated with the presence of bacteria of the genus Klebsiella.
Origin
Late Middle English; earliest use found in Guy de Chauliac's Grande Chirurgie. From classical Latin ozaena (also ozēna) a fetid polypus in the nose, a strong-smelling marine polyp (Pliny) from Hellenistic Greek ὄζαινα from ancient Greek ὄζειν to smell + -αινα, suffix forming nouns.
