Apparently largely restricted to Scottish use between the 16th and early 20th centuries..
Origin
Late Middle English; earliest use found in Cursor Mundi: a Northumbrian poem of the 14th century. Probably originally from runkle + -ed; in later use also partly from runkle + -ed.
