A genus of aerobic, Gram-negative, non-motile bacteria of the family Neisseraceae, which are commonly present in soil, water, and sewage, and occasionally cause disease in humans, especially in hospitals; (also acinetobacter) a bacterium of this genus.
Origin
1960s; earliest use found in Biochimica Biophysica Acta. From scientific Latin Acinetobacter, genus name from ancient Greek ἀκίνετος motionless + bacter- (in bacterium).
