Mid 17th century. Probably the reflex of a borrowing from early Scandinavian, of uncertain origin. In some forms perhaps also partly representing a merger with the reflex of a separate borrowing (in Shetland use via Norn) from early Scandinavian; forms showing excrescent -d may also have been influenced by the reflex of this borrowing.
