A condition characterized by neovascularization (proliferation of blood vessels) of the anterior surface of the iris, sometimes resulting in glaucoma, and occurring most commonly in diabetics; an instance of this.
Origin
1930s; earliest use found in Archives of Ophthalmology. From German Rubeose (C. von Noorden Zuckerkrankheit u. ihre Behandlung (ed. 7, 1917) v. 262; also (in same source, rare) as Rubeosis; from classical Latin rubēns reddish + German -ose), with ending remodelled after -osis.
