Late Middle English; earliest use found in Geoffrey Chaucer (c1340–1400), poet and administrator. From Middle French astrologien, astrologyen (French (now hist.) astrologien; the usual modern French word is astrologue) astrologer, also astronomer from astrologie + -ien. In later use remodelled after words in -ian.
