A person who surrenders or who gives up on something; specifically (derogatory ) a Boer who surrendered to the British during the Boer War (1899–1902).
Origin
Early 20th century; earliest use found in The Contemporary Review. From hands-up + -er, apparently after Afrikaans hendsopper, (now usually) hensopper (beginning of the 20th cent.; from hendsop, (now usually) hensop to surrender + -er).
