1Having round ears or ear-like appendages. In later use chiefly Zoology, in the names of mammals with rounded ears.
2Designating a European willow, Salix aurita, which has persistent, ear-shaped, toothed stipules growing either side of the stem near the base of the leaves.
3Designating a type of cap (or occasionally wig) fitting closely around the head and covering the ears, popular in the mid 18th cent. Now historical.

Early 17th century; earliest use found in George Sandys (1578–1644), writer and traveller. From round + eared.
