Origin
Mid 16th century (in the Spanish form hamaca): via Spanish from Taino hamaka; the ending was altered in the 16th century by association with -ock.
This was hamaka in the extinct Caribbean language Taino. It became hamaca in Spanish, which was used at first in English. The last syllable was altered in the 16th century to conform to English words ending in –ock.
