Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal. From scientific Latin Rotatoria from post-classical Latin rotatorius + -a, after earlier use as specific name (in scientific Latin Vorticella rotatoria (O. F. Mueller Verm. I. i. 106)).
