1970s; earliest use found in Diacritics. From French OULIPO, acronym from the initial letters of Ouvroir deLittératurePotentielle, lit. ‘workshop of potential literature’, the name of a group of writers and mathematicians formed in 1960 by François Le Lionnais and Raymond Queneau.
