Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From classical Latin peltasta foot soldier equipped with a pelta from ancient Greek πελταστής, either from πελτάζειν to serve as a peltast (from πέλτη) + -τής, suffix forming agent nouns, or from πέλτη + -στής.
