Early 20th century; earliest use found in Phonetic Journal. From the name of Christopher Louis Pelman (born to German parents as Christoph L. Poehlmann), co-founder (in either 1899 or 1900, with J. W. Ennever) of the Pelman Institute for the Scientific Development of Mind, Memory, and Personality in London.
