Any of several tropical mangroves having a fibrous bark used for making ropes; especially a kind of yellow-flowered hibiscus, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Griffith Hughes (1707–1750).
