Used with reference to a manoeuvre used in the diagnosis of congenital dislocation of the hip, in which the flexed hips of the newborn are fully abducted, giving rise to an audible click or palpable jerk as the dislocated femoral head returns to the acetabulum. Origin1950s; earliest use found in The Lancet. From the name of Marino Ortolani, Italian orthopaedic surgeon who described the sign in 1937 (Pediatria 45 129). |
