More fully Rogerene Quaker. A member of a small Christian sect founded by John Rogers (1648–1721) in Connecticut, opposed to various formal practices of the established churches (such as the requirement for worship on Sundays) and participation in, or taxation for, the military.
Origin
Mid 18th century; earliest use found in Joshua Hempstead (1678–1758). From Roger- (in the name of John Rogers, who founded the sect) + -ene.
