Late 16th century; earliest use found in John Florio (1553–1625), author and teacher of languages. Partly from Italian rodomontata, (now regional) rodomontada rodomontade, in later use with the ending remodelled after -ado, and partly an alteration of rodomontade after words ending in -ado.
