Late 16th century; earliest use found in Arthur Golding (d. 1606), translator. From classical Latin Sēricus of or belonging to the Seres, made of silk, silken from Hellenistic Greek σηρικός of or belonging to the Seres, made of silk from Σῆρες + -ικός.
