Designating a celebrated ancient Roman wine of the vintage of a.u.c. 633, produced when Opimius was consul. Occasionally in extended use: any wine of a premium vintage. Frequently in Opimian wine.
Origin
Early 17th century; earliest use found in Philemon Holland (1552–1637), translator. From classical Latin Opīmiānus laid down in the consulship of Lucius Opimius, 121 b.c. from the name of Lucius Opīmius + -ānus.
