A genus of evergreen herbaceous perennials of the family Convallariaceae (or Liliaceae), native to parts of South-East Asia from India to Japan and cultivated elsewhere as ornamental or ground-covering plants, which form mats of long, narrow, grasslike leaves; (also ophiopogon) a plant of this genus, especially O. japonicus.
Origin
Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Lindley (1799–1865), botanist and horticulturist. From scientific Latin Ophiopogon from Hellenistic Greek ὀϕιο- + ancient Greek πώγων beard.
