1 Biology. The cytoplasm of an egg. Also: each of the regions of the cytoplasm of an egg which develop into distinct structures in the body.
2 Mycology. In an oomycete, especially one of the order Peronosporales: the central portion of the oogonial cytoplasm, which becomes the oosphere.

Late 19th century; earliest use found in The Botanical Gazette. From oo- + -plasm, apparently as alteration of ovoplasm.
