释义

Rightboys

/ˈrʌɪtbɔɪz/
(also Right Boys)
noun
In plural An agrarian protest movement active in south-west Ireland in 1785-8, which acted in the name of the symbolic leader ‘Captain Right’, and whose chief grievance was the level of tithes payable to the Church of Ireland; individual branches of the movement later put forward a variety of other demands relating to the social and economic conditions of rural workers.
  • The Rightboys movement was more widespread than that of the earlier Whiteboys, and had a wider social base, even attracting some initial support from the local gentry..

Origin

Late 18th century. From right + the plural of boy, after white boy, and probably suggested by the assumed name Captain Right.
