Late 19th century; earliest use found in Johnston's Dental Miscellany. From the genitive of the name of John Mankey Riggs, U.S. dentist, who conducted a discussion of the disease at the twelfth annual meeting of the Connecticut Valley Dental Society in October 1875 + disease.
