The star α Centauri, a significant star of the southern sky.
Origin
Late 17th century; earliest use found in Edward Sherburne (d. 1702), translator and poet. From post-classical Latin Rigil Kentaurus from Arabic rijl qanṭūris foot of the centaur (1665 in Ulugh Beg; from rijl foot, leg + qanṭūris centaur).
