A type of rubber which has been expanded to a cellular condition by causing it to absorb a neutral gas under pressure during vulcanization, formerly used for making lifebelts, floats, etc.

1920s; earliest use found in The Trade Marks Journal. Origin uncertain; perhaps from on- (apparently an arbitrary element) + azote.
