Late 15th century; earliest use found in Robert Henryson (d. c1490), poet. Apparently either from rhetor + -y or an alteration of rhetoric with substitution of -y for the ending, perhaps after ancient Greek ῥητορεία oratory (from ῥήτωρ + -εία). Compare post-classical Latin rhetoria (in an undated text from Hungary).
