Origin
Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). From classical Latin Rhēnus, the name of the River Rhine + -ite. In sense 1 in allusion to the name of Rheinbreitbach (formerly also Rheinbreitenbach) in Germany, where the mineral is found.
