Late 17th century; earliest use found in Thomas Jones (d. 1682), Church of England clergyman. From Welsh rhandir territory, area, piece of land, unit of land measurement, share (of inherited land), patrimony from rhan part, portion + tir land, territory (Old Welsh tir) from the same Indo-European base as classical Latin terra.
