Mid 19th century (in an earlier sense). From German Rezbanyit (R. Hermann 1858, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chemical 75 450; A. Frenzel 1882, in Mineral. u. petrogr. Mittheil. 5 178) from Rezbanya, Retzbanya (Hungarian Rézbánya), the name of a village formerly in Hungary (now Băiţa in Romania) + -it.
