Mid 19th century; earliest use found in John Ogilvie (1797–1867), lexicographer. From Vietnamese ghe boat, junk + a second element of uncertain origin, perhaps Vietnamese dương ocean (from Chinese yáng), although such a compound appears not to be recorded in Vietnamese.
