An amino acid of the opine group, C9H18N4O4, found in the tissues of some cephalopods and lamellibranch molluscs and also synthesized by plant cells infected by certain strains of the crown gall pathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens.
Origin
1920s; earliest use found in Chemical Abstracts. From octopus + -ine, after German Oktopin, so called on account of the compound being first found in octopus muscle.
