A curved, tenor oboe, a fifth lower in pitch than the ordinary instrument, in use from about 1720 to 1760, and superseded by the cor anglais.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in John Stainer (1840–1901), musicologist and composer. From Italian oboe da caccia, lit. ‘hunting oboe’ from oboe + da of + caccia hunt, chase.
