A kind of broom, Retama raetam, with white flowers and almost (or entirely) leafless branches, occurring in desert regions of the Middle East and northern Africa.
Origin
Late 18th century; earliest use found in John Richardson (?1741–1795), orientalist. From Hebrew rĕṯem kind of broom, cognate with Arabic ratam.
