Electromagnetic radiation which is selectively reflected from the surface of a crystalline solid when the frequency of the incident radiation is approximately equal to the vibrational frequency of the ions constituting the solid.
Origin
Late 19th century; earliest use found in Nature: a weekly journal of science. From German Reststrahlen residual rays from Rest remainder + Strahlen, plural of Strahl ray.
