A liver in which the central zones of the lobules are dark red and the peripheral zones pale, presenting an appearance resembling the cut surface of a nutmeg, and usually resulting from chronic passive congestion.

Mid 19th century; earliest use found in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London.
